This painting, done at Lanikai point, is another one that has been on
the back of my mind for a few years now. I worked on the sketches and
the resulting painting for a good part of the summer, and when I
wrapped it up, the title "A Fine Summer's End" seemed to fit perfectly.
There is a deep sensation I experience here at this time of day. All
of these elements of sky, sea, and land converging so wonderfully,
crowned by that end-of the -day light, creating a brief rightness
about existence that is hard to express in words. I suppose that sense
of "rightness" I mention is probably what I hope to convey in the work.
One of the things that has become clearer to me as I've worked on
paintings over the years is the permanence of what painters can do.
The idea that a particular brushstroke, (and the emotions behind it)
will stand an excellent chance of being around in another 200 years is
pretty compelling. Not many professions nowadays offer that.
